Tsai Ming-liang (born 1957) is a Malaysian-born art house filmmaker who moved to Taiwan aged 20. Throughout his career, he has directed 11 feature-length films and won over 40 international film awards. In this exhibit, we present his earliest feature films (as well as a TaiwanPlus exclusive documentary on the director). It is in these works that we can see the development of Tsai’s unique cinematic perspective, characterized by his sparse use of dialogue and long shots. Tsai uses this approach to capture the isolation and coldness of modern, urban life.
